The battery numbers, translated.

Two numbers matter, and they answer different questions.

kWh (energy) — how long you can run. Think of it as the size of your water tank. A refrigerator, some lights, Wi-Fi, and fans sip from that tank slowly; central air conditioning drains it fast.
kW (power) — how much you can run at once. That’s the width of the pipe leaving the tank. A big tank with a narrow pipe still can’t start your A/C.
Usable capacity is the honest kWh figure — what the battery will actually deliver, not the cells’ raw total. Compare batteries on usable numbers only.
Surge (peak) power is a short burst above the continuous rating, and it matters more than people think: air conditioners and well pumps demand a spike of power at start-up. Whether a given battery starts your A/C is a design check against your actual equipment, not a brochure line.
The contenders

The three contenders, in one paragraph each.

Tesla Powerwall 3 — the integrated appliance. About 13.5 kWh usable and 11.5 kW continuous per unit — the strongest single-unit power rating of the three, which is why one Powerwall 3 can carry loads that would take multiple units elsewhere. The solar inverter is built into the battery: one box, fewer components, very clean on new installs. The trade-off is flexibility — it’s designed to be the center of the system, and it’s a Tesla-rules ecosystem when something needs service.
FranklinWH aPower 2 — the whole-home manager. About 15 kWh usable and 10 kW continuous per unit — the largest single-box energy of the three. Franklin splits the job in two: aPower batteries store energy, and the aGate controller runs the home — deciding which circuits get power, when, and from which source, including a generator. It’s the architecture that thinks most like an electrician: circuits, sources, priorities.
Enphase IQ Batteries — the modular ecosystem. Small AC-coupled units — the IQ Battery 5P is about 5 kWh and 3.84 kW continuous each — stacked to the size you need, with the newer 10C generation continuing the same modular, microinverter-based approach. No single big box and no single point of failure; the natural companion when your roof already runs Enphase microinverters. The trade-off: whole-home-scale power means stacking several units, so the design conversation is “how many,” not “whether.”
Retrofit reality

The inverter question (and why retrofits care).

A battery can’t talk to your solar panels without an inverter in the middle, and the three brands put it in different places. Powerwall 3 builds a solar inverter into the battery — elegant for brand-new solar-plus-battery, but on a home with existing solar it wants to be integrated with (or replace) what’s on your wall, which is a real design decision. FranklinWH and Enphase are AC-coupled: they connect on the house side and generally don’t care what brand of solar you already own. That’s why this is the biggest fork in the road for Central Texas homeowners adding a battery to an existing system — often a system whose original installer is gone. Whole-home or just the essentials?

Backing up the whole home means the battery must handle your biggest loads — central A/C included — which drives up both the kW you need at once and the kWh you’ll burn through. Backing up the essentials (fridge, lights, internet, fans, medical equipment, a window unit) is dramatically cheaper and gets most families through most outages comfortably. Outage strategy

Battery, generator, or both?

We install and service standby generators too, so this is a genuinely neutral answer: batteries are silent, instant, and fuel-free but finite; generators run for days on natural gas or propane but need fuel, maintenance, and a moment to start. For multi-day grid failures — think the long winter outages Texans remember — the strongest setup is often both: battery for instant, overnight, and short outages; generator to carry the load when an outage outlasts the tank. Think ahead

Growing later.

Plans change — an EV shows up, a pool pump gets added. Powerwall 3 grows by expansion units attached to the main unit; FranklinWH adds aPower batteries under the same aGate controller; Enphase adds small modules a few kWh at a time — the most granular path of the three. All three expand; they differ in step size and in how much day one’s design constrains the final system. If you know you’ll grow, say so at design time — it changes which architecture is cheapest over the whole journey.

The fine print

Warranty and monitoring, in plain English.

All three carry 10–15 year manufacturer warranties: Tesla publishes 10 years on Powerwall; FranklinWH and Enphase publish 15 on their current batteries — with fine print tying coverage to proper commissioning, registration, and sometimes internet connectivity. That’s not trivia: we regularly meet systems whose installer vanished before registration was finished, which can complicate an otherwise-valid claim. All three have capable apps; Franklin’s leans into circuit-level control, Enphase’s into per-unit detail, Tesla’s into simplicity. Our outages come in two flavors — long winter-storm events and brief summer grid-stress interruptions. The winter kind argues for more stored energy (or a generator partner); the summer kind is where any of the three shine.

Who fixes it in year six?

Here’s the question almost nobody asks at the sales table: when the battery faults in 2032, who answers the phone? Thousands of Central Texas solar and battery systems were installed by companies that no longer exist, and a battery with no servicer is just an expensive wall ornament. Neither is better everywhere. Per unit, FranklinWH stores somewhat more energy; Powerwall 3 delivers more continuous power and builds in a solar inverter. Whole-home control and generator pairing favor Franklin; integrated new solar-plus-storage favors Tesla. Your loads decide it.

What’s the best Tesla Powerwall alternative?

For homes with existing solar, an AC-coupled system — FranklinWH or Enphase — usually retrofits more simply. Which one depends on your inverter, backup goals, and expansion plans.

Which battery is cheapest?
