The amperage jump
100→200 amps is the common path; 200→320+ is a different scale of service equipment and utility coordination. The load calculation says which one your home actually needs.

Service entrance condition
Mast, weatherhead, riser, meter can — if they’re aging or undersized, they’re part of the job. This is the single most common surprise in older homes, and we scope it up front.

Code triggers
A new panel means today’s code: grounding and bonding updates, AFCI/GFCI protection where required. The permit inspection will require them — a quote that skips them is a quote that grows later.

Replacing in place is one job; relocating the panel is another. Access, wall condition, and how circuits reach the new panel all move labor.

The swap needs a planned disconnect/reconnect window with your utility — and occasionally service-drop work on their side. We schedule it so the outage is short and expected.

Can I just add a subpanel instead?

Sometimes — when the main service has capacity and you just need circuits. When the service itself is the limit, a subpanel only moves the problem. The load calc tells you which story is yours.
