2. Lights dim or flicker when something big switches on
A brief dip when the AC compressor or a pool pump starts up can be normal. A flicker that’s noticeable, repeats often, or has gotten more pronounced over time usually points to a circuit, or the whole panel, working harder than it should to keep voltage steady.
3. The panel or breakers feel warm to the touch
A panel box shouldn’t be warm. Warmth, or a faint burning smell near it, can mean a breaker or connection is carrying more current than it’s rated for, or that a connection inside has loosened or corroded over time. That kind of wear often isn’t visible from outside the box at all.
4. You’ve added major loads since the panel was installed
Central air, a pool, an EV charger, a battery system: each one adds meaningful draw. A panel that was right-sized for the house it was installed in doesn’t automatically stay right-sized as the home’s electrical needs grow. If your panel is older and your home’s electrical footprint has grown since, it’s worth having someone check the math.
5. You want to add something new and there’s no room
Panels have a limited number of open slots, and older panels often have less spare capacity than modern ones. If an electrician tells you there’s no room for the charger, battery, or dedicated circuit you want, that’s not a sales pitch, it’s a real constraint, and a panel upgrade is usually the straightforward fix.

None of these signs on their own means you need a new panel today. A single breaker trip during the hottest week of the year might just mean that breaker did its job.
